You’ve been walking by it for months, watching that serene space emerge on the river walk with the name Quantum Clinic, and wondering, what goes on in there. Is it a spa? A doctor’s office? What does a “quantum” have to do with a clinic?

We got answers from co-founders, and FtAB members, Katelyn Lehman and Maria Ramos, both with advanced degrees in clinical psychology. The philosophy of their new business is to use the concepts of quantum mechanics to enhance the mind-body connection.

“Therapy hasn’t changed fundamentally in 100 years, but we now have this emergent model of unified physics, quantum mechanics, that has an analogy in the human experience. The quantum realm is the rich inner realm of sensations, feelings, images, and thoughts. And that’s where we put our focus.”

- Dr. Katelyn Lehman, co-founder, Quantum Clinic

The crux of the treatment is a one-hour session in one of six sensory deprivation tanks, what the Quantum Clinic calls Floatation REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy). Clients float in a warm shallow bath buoyed with a thousand pounds of dissolved Epsom salts, Quantum Clinic healing frequencies, and minimal or no light. “You feel like you’re floating in space,” says Ramos. “Some people say they feel transported when they’re in the tank, either within themselves or to states of euphoria or a kind of transcendence.”

The float can help with physical ailments such as chronic pain, inflammatory disease, and arthritis, but the principal benefits are emotional and psychological. “We recognize that over 90-percent of disease is attributable to stress,” says Lehman, “and so we wanted to create a stress reduction intervention. We think of ourselves as creating a new type of paradigm in preventative care.”

The session ends with a quiet time of reflection. “You just spent an hour with yourself,” says Ramos, “it’s important to tap in. What was that like for you?” There is a clinical staff on hand if you need help processing the experience.

“There are a lot of places where you can just float,” she says, “but this is not that. This is an experience. It’s not transactional. It’s transformational.
